Changing careers: Working as an elite PA in London

Private personal assistants to affluent families in London

With the explosion of the super-wealthy in London, more and more professionals are changing careers and becoming a PA to the rich. Former secretaries, bankers and hospitality managers are learning the secret to pivoting to jobs in private service. It's not as hard as one would think because it really comes down to what transferrable skills one has.

As one of the world's most expensive cities, London has a number of ultra-high net worth families and billionaires. In fact, London is ranked as one of the world's top-10 billionaire capitals; so many luxury services are needed.

What do private personal assistants do in London?

Many of the ultra-rich have a number of estates, private jets, and exotic car fleets; so private concierge companies acting in personal assistant capacities are capitalizing on the craze. The lives of the super-wealthy are complicated, so domestic staffing agencies step in to assist.

For example, since there is nowhere to park in London, having a private driver (chauffer) is vital. Additionally, since popular coffee shops are always packed with a waiting list, private assistants are paid to wait for tables. When the PA acquires a table, perhaps in Harrods, then the assistant can call the high-net-worth individual to tell him the table is ready.

Personal assistants are in charge of the private jets too

Many of the billion-dollar families in London also have many different modes of transportation. For short trips, a Rolls Royce will do the trick. For a little bit longer trips, it wouldn't be uncommon to spend 15,000 euros for a short helicopter trip or even £30,000 for a private jet lasting only about 15 or 20 minutes.

"The upper echelon have great means," says Brian Daniel of The Celebrity Personal Assistant Network, a staffing agency that caters to celebrities and royal families. "Money doesn't seem to be an object. The rich want what they want, when they want it, so the price isn't so much of a concern. It's really about convenience."
