What are celebrity handlers?
For years, you may have been hearing the term "celebrity handler," but what does it mean? Well, as the name suggests, they "handle" things for the stars they work for. Actually, sometimes they handle the stars themselves: meaning they have to take control of an out-of-control situation and, sometimes, have to "talk celebrities off the ledge" -- figuratively speaking.
What do celebrity handlers do?
A celebrity handler is another form of a personal assistant, or what we call in the business a "lifestyle manager" (personal concierge). There is no set job description because every employer is different. So, whether you're a Hollywood movie star, a sports figure, or a finance wizard from Wall Street, you need people to assist with your complex life, and that's where celebrity handlers come in. Just some of the duties could include but not be limited to:
- Arranging travel plans: Commercial and private aviation
- Gift shopping for high-net-worth celebrity friends of your boss
- Accompany celebrities to personal appearances or charity events
- Act as a liaison to agents, managers, lawyers, personal trainers, etc.
Who are the well-known celebrity handlers?
Brian Daniel of The Celebrity Personal Assistant Network is one of the more well-known celebrity handlers in the business. He is a former PA to the rich and famous, and now he is a recruiter for assistants to the Hollywood elite, ultra-high net worth families, and Silicon Valley tycoons.
"There are no set hours or a specific set of responsibilities to be a celebrity handler," says Brian Daniel. "Mainly, you have to be very flexible and able to work long hours. Trust, of course, is paramount because when you assist celebrities, you are often given a lot of responsibility with cash and credit."
And that, my friends, is where the problems can begin. When celebrities give their handlers their credit cards or access to cash, then protocols need to be put in place to ensure safeguards. Recently, for example, the assistant to an NBA star absconded with funds to the tune of $5,000,000.
