The truth about celebrity personal assistant jobs
I want to get one thing straight from the beginning: working for the rich and famous – whether it be to a celebrity or other VIP – is NOT like the movie “The Devil Wears Prada.” That kind of fanfare makes great fodder for book and movie audiences, but it is not the true reality. And because of that perception, I think the personal assistant headhunting business at large is hurt by it. Many qualified candidates who could make a career out of being a personal assistant to a high-net-worth family are turned off to the idea because of hyped-up movies and books peddled by Hollywood.
Now, to be fair, that craziness and insanity shown on the silver screen does exist to a very small degree. The actual fact is that employers do not want to have to retrain employees all the time, which is what happens to bosses who are mean to their staff and make them quit. So, in real-life, most assistants that I know have a great boss and fabulous benefits (NOTE: When I use the word “assistant,” I’m talking about personal assistants, estate managers, executive assistants, business managers, secretaries, etc.).
You need to know one very important thing: It is very hard to get a great assistant position to a celebrity, VIP, or high-net-worth family. That is why I had to constantly go out of my way to learn my “tricks of the trade” for landing the gigs, which I will be sharing with you later.
I would like to remind you of something you already know: Nothing in life that is worthwhile is easy. If you have the dream but not the drive, I don’t think I can help you. It is going to take time and effort for you to land your ideal job, but don’t worry because I’m going to shave a lot of time off the learning process by helping you avoid pitfalls.
We are going to turn your mission to land a dream job into a game, but it’s going to be fun to play. It is time for you to invest in yourself. So instead of buying the latest and hottest mobile phone or flat-screen television, I suggest spending the money on something worthwhile – your future career!
So what does this all mean? It means I have debunked another myth: The myth that getting a job that could pay you $150,000 a year is easy if you just “meet the right person.” Beginning actors often have this myth in Hollywood. If they could just meet someone like Bruce Willis then he could give them a job. WRONG! Life doesn’t work that way. Regardless of what you may have heard, the exception isn’t the rule.
The best thing to do first is put everything in perspective. Millionaires and billionaires are constantly bombarded with people and business propositions every day of the week. Moreover, they get thousands of resumes each year, so what is so special about yours? The key to my success in getting assistant jobs has been my ability to persevere and go way above and beyond what any reasonable person may do to get the job. In the end, it paid off for me.
