all about The Nanny Diaries

The Nanny Diaries: The A-to-Z Guide

Just as there is a famous movie about personal assistants, there is also one about the world of the nanny. That movie, of course, is The Nanny Diaries.

The film is about the story of Annie Braddock (Scarlett Johansson) who accidentally falls into the job of being a professional nanny to a high-net-worth family in New York City. Although the book and movie are a fictionalized story, they do have seeds of truth because the novel's authors, Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus, were real-life nannies to wealthy families in NYC.

The Nanny Diaries: Real-life nannies working for the super-rich

What is it like to be a nanny to celebrities, billionaires and high-profile families? The movie, honestly, isn't so far of a stretch. It is actually grounded in real life. Professional nannies who work for affluent families usually work long hours, and they are under constant pressure to perform.

In fact, the nanny profession has become so institutionalized that there are many famous nanny training schools all over the world. Those who attend get an accredited degree and learn things like nutrition, self defense against kidnapping, and childhood psychology.

How can I get a job as a nanny to wealthy families like in the movie?

how to watch The Nanny Diaries movieThe Nanny Diaries movie is now streaming
In the movie, Annie Braddock falls into the job; but in real life, one would typically need professional training and prior experience to land the top-notch jobs with billionaires or celebrities.

In fact, many high-net-worth families are now hiring high-profile nannies that are also trained educators. Those positions are called a governess.

Because some wealthy families now home school their children, the nanny (or governess) will actually design a curriculum that customized for the needs of the family.

This is a highly specialized profession that can pay a lot of money if you're patient enough to get the training (and you have to love children).

How much money would Annie Braddock in "The Nanny Diaries" have made?

In today's money, an entry-level nanny in New York City with no professional training could make $25 an hour, but salaries can skyrocket based on the level of training and experience. For example, if a nanny had the title of governess, then she could make as much as $250,000 a year if she had the following qualifications:

  • BA degree in Early Childhood Education
  • Master's degree in Primary School Curriculum
  • A government approved teaching license from the Department of Education
  • At least 10 years of experience working for ultra-high net worth families or celebrities

As you can see, the nanny profession can be very terrific if you have the dedication and training that it takes to reach the upper echelon.

Where can I watch "The Nanny Diaries" full movie?

Right now, you can watch The Nanny Diaries full movie on streaming services like YouTube, Hulu, Amazon and Netflix. If you want to go old school and watch the DVD, then major retailers like Target, Walmart and Barnes & Noble usually carry it.

The movie, actually, is quite entertaining. Users on IMDb gave it a 6.2 out of 10; but it didn't do as well on Rotten Tomatoes, which only gave it a 34%.

"The Nanny Diaries" cast

A final word about "The Nanny Diaries"

Although there can be some downsides to the nanny profession, it can also be very rewarding. If you love children and are dedicated to learning a demanding craft, then being a professional nanny to a celebrity or high-net-worth family might be for you.
