Director of Residences

a guide to the director of residences
A Director of Residences has a role to oversee the Estate Managers at multiple properties. They usually report to the Chief of Staff or the Director of Operations.

The Director of Residences is responsible for the implementation of procedures for vendor management, preventative maintenance, and the hiring of house managers.

How to Estate Managers Work with the Director of Residences?

Estate Managers (also called House Managers) oversee the daily operations of individual properties, so they are like a General Manager. The Director of Residences, on the other hand, is like a Regional Manager with responsibilities far greater than just the oversight of an individual property.

These responsibilities can include the approval of equestrian facilities, the use of certain contractors, and the hiring of security teams or even interior designers. In short, it is an important role with key functions.

We are Hiring for Director of Residences in 2025

Our domestic staffing agency can assist your corporate offices with the hiring of a Director of Residences. In fact, we hired a DOR just days ago with luxury hotel experience. The candidate was from the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group with experience handling major financial expenditures, which is what our clients often ask for.

Since the management of properties represents outside vendors as well, the position comes with a very high level of responsibility; therefore, the pay can be higher than $250,000 a year plus perks.

Can a family office have multiple directors?

Depending on how many estates the family office has under management, there could be more than one Director of Residences in multiple countries. Several of our clients, for example, have properties in North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East, so the Director of Operations has oversight over all of the properties.

With such a large operation, a leader of vendor management liaises with the Director of Residences to manage maintenance services for the owners. This position could be a contract job, but it's up to each family office to decide on the compensation structure.

Which cities have the best jobs for estate managers?

As you might expect, major cities like New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and Miami are leaders in the United States for the best jobs. However, contract positions are available elsewhere if you have the demonstrated skills and experience.

If you're unsure about your experience, our recruiters suggest that you engage in professional development. Being the manager of a residence is a good start, but the management of multiple properties often does require luxury hotel experience.
