Introduction: Understanding the fundamentals of the PA industry
Book Introduction
I would first like to say how tremendously excited I am to be sharing my stories and secrets with you. As my headhunting and consulting business has evolved, I have repeatedly been presented with the idea that I should write a book. Time and again, I grappled with the decision about taking the step.
Honestly, I had been very hesitant to do so. Why? The reason I got into career coaching in the first place is because I want to give aspiring candidates the best chance they have at landing their dream job. The only way I know to do that is to give one-on-one advice, and with the invention of platforms like Skype video, I’ve also been able to extend my reach across the globe.
I think that we can all agree that each and every person’s work situation is unique. We all bring a completely different set of job experiences to the table, and I like to hone and highlight each person’s set of skills so that they can properly present themselves to prospective employers. In short, I don’t think even a very well-written book can do that as effectively has personal coaching.
There are many books on the subject of landing dream jobs, and some are better than others. One of the challenges writers face when trying to publish a book is that they must reach a “wide audience” so that profits can be maximized. For that reason, many of the books out there – in my humble opinion – are very generic, have completely made-up stories for entertainment value, and issue a lot of directives that are simply just common sense.
I have tried to avoid all these typical problems with a unique format, which is to say I tell a lot of stories about my actual job experiences, so you will know what it is like to work with celebrities and billionaires. In short, it’s real-world advice not based on any theory. One of my colleagues described this book as a modern day "Aesop's Fables" for job hunters; I wholeheartedly agree.
Admittedly, some of the information I will share with you in the book is just “common sense.” But my ultimate goal is to cover all of the important topics, beginning and advanced. I do have a back-to-basics philosophy because in the world of the super- rich, the small details are the key to success. And while many of my directives are just common sense, every single day I’m reminded that job hunters need to hear them because of the inappropriate ways some approach me for representation.
I also feel compelled to mention that the information in this book is brought to you based on my life experience, both personal and professional. I have no doubt that each and every fact that I assert as being “true” could easily be refuted as wrong or too unconventional by someone else. This fact, however, I know to be true: What I preach in this book has worked very well for me. I think it will work for you, too.
Whatever your career goals may be, I wish you the very best!
Sincerely,
Brian Daniel
