What is the difference between a tutor, private teacher, and homeschool specialist?
There are a lot of titles thrown around in the private service industry, and not everyone can agree on job titles, duties, and responsibilities. When we consult with you, we will help you determine the best way forward.
Tutor
In a general sense, a tutor supplements a student's learning but is not their primary teacher. If a student is enrolled in public or private school, teachers assign homework, and a tutor will help guide the student to reach their learning goals.
Tutors can work with students in a single subject or in multiple areas. It largely depends on the student's needs. This instruction can happen as many days per week as needed, but the job is usually part-time.
A tutor may be a subject-matter expert, but not necessarily a "qualified teacher," which we will cover later in this article. Finally, an outside tutor may be hired for this type of instruction, or a nanny may do "double duty" and take on that responsibility as well.

Private Teacher
Some celebrities and high-net-worth families like to hire a fully qualified professional teacher. This is a step above a tutor. This role could be part- or full-time, depending on the number of children and the level of instruction needed in the household.
This isn't "Home Schooling" per se, but a supplement to the child's primary source of education. A private teacher would traditionally work in the evenings to help tutor students in various subjects. The difference, though, is that the level of training a certified teacher has goes far beyond that of a tutor.
To be a fully qualified professional teacher, the instructor typically has about seven years of higher education: A four-year BA degree in the subject areas (ex. primary school education), and the teacher also gets a "teaching license," which is a master's degree equivalent. These post BA programs are usually two or three years in length, and the purpose is to learn how to deliver the content effectively (pedagogical techniques).

Home School Specialist
A teacher who works full-time in the home instructing children who don't go to a public or private school is a Home School Specialist -- and they should be a fully qualified teacher with a license.
Some parents may not necessarily agree with the teaching philosophies of local schools, so that's why they elect to do home schooling instead. In cases like these, it would be the teacher's responsibility to design the curriculum completely from scratch, and they also need to measure the learning outcomes and ensure children are climbing the "skills ladders" and hitting international benchmarks in education.

When to hire a governess
If the household has young children and they employee a nanny, some families elect to hire a governess to take on the responsibilities of both raising the children and educating them.
What is a governess?
Essentially, a governess is an amalgamation of a fully qualified nanny and a fully licensed teacher. In other words, they have special training in caring for caring for children, and they also have formal education in the art of instruction.
A governess may also home school children, but that isn't always the case. Because no two households are alike, each family must decide what level of skill is needed when it comes to caring for their children. An experienced household staffing agent can assess the needs of the family and make recommendations about hiring.
